Elisabeth Sparkle: There was a slight misuse of the Substance
Story
A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself… There’s nothing scarier than being human, and these films fully explore the inhuman ways our bodies can betray them. US From scary to daring, here are five horror movies you might have missed.. Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could shoot his scenes . Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “Thank You Notes”; during the credits.. The vanity mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly broken during the fight sequence..
There are A LOT
A special thank you in the credits goes to the many extras in the theater scene , who was covered in blood.. Featured in The 7PM Project: September 20, 2024 Episode (2024). Pump It UpWritten by Michael Hall, Leonardo StellaStarred by Earl Gregory Produced by Julien Deguines. Let me start with the positives. The casting? Perfect.
The concept was phenomenal and super interesting
Acting? Pretty flawless. All the performances drew me in and added a lot to the story. A really great idea for a movie. The cinematography was unique and very good. The score added a lot to the suspense.
So why 6 stars?
The first 2 thirds of the film executed all of these things to a T. The end. It took the believable and suspenseful aspects of the story and threw them out the window in favor of satisfying the director’s Cronenberg fantasy and desire to maximize the special effects budget. It came off as completely disorganized, almost like it had no idea what to do with the ending or any desire to make it interesting. A film with so much to be desired and I left the theater disappointed. Side notes: enough with the butt kicks.
We get what you’re trying to do, that’s enough
Also, if you want to gross your audience out, work in the writers room. Adding squelching sounds over almost every scene is lazy. Check out our list of exciting new films from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, the New York Film Festival and more.
